27 Ayurveda Colleges in Danger of Closure

Due to lack of staff, 27 Ayurveda Colleges in the State were on the verge of closure. However, they were saved due to humane gesture shown by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

This shocking revelation was made by the RGUHS Vice-Chancellor Dr. S. Ramananda Shetty today.

He was speaking after inaugurating the three-day State-level conference of Ayurveda College students 'Jignyasa' (Debate) at Sri Ganapati Sachchidananda Ashram here.

He disclosed that there were 54 Ayurveda Colleges in the State and 27 of them were suffering from lack of staff.

The Vice-Chancellor recalled that the sorry state of affairs in Ayurveda Colleges in the State came to light at a recent meeting of RGUHS Syndicate. A proposal was brought before the meeting to derecognise these colleges.

Dr. Shetty disclosed that the Syndicate rejected the proposal on humanitarian grounds on his initiative as derecognition would have caused a lot of hardships to 1,947 students since the colleges had already provided admission to them. Sri Ganapati Sachchi-dananda Swamiji, who graced the occasion, regretted that those students who do not secure engineering and medical seats join Ayurveda Colleges but not with genuine interest. "This kind of attitude should go," he advised. Chief Minister's Parliamentary Secretary S.A. Ramdas was the chief guest.

State ABVP Secretary P.M. Ravindra, Dr. Shenoy of Government College of Indian Medicine, Mysore, Dr. Gurubasavaraj, Dr. A.S. Chandrashekhar, Dr. Gajanan Hegde and ABVP District President Udayravi were present.

More than 1,200 students of 54 Ayurveda Colleges from various parts of the State are attending the conference organised under the auspices of Akhila Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishat (ABVP).

The students will debate the theme 'Learn Ayur-veda, Practice Ayurveda' during the meet.
